Although I first had trouble trying to figure out the Flash program, having never used it before, I feel I am finally starting to get the hang of it. My goal is to create an animation that is simple, with a simple storyline. I have used simple lines and shape to create my animation. So far I have laid out all of the scenes, and am almost finished creating them. I still have some small changes to make, and I still need to incorporate sound. Overall, though, I feel like it is going very well, and I am liking what I have done so far.

Animation

<img style="cursor:pointer; The one I looked at in particular is called "Wrestling with the Blob Beast". Although this piece is simple, I greatly appreciated it for its abstraction, color, and playfullness. If you do not wish to go to the link, I can explain what occurs in this work. The opening scene is a wall, and a monster or creature of some sort sneaks onto the screen from the bottom crack of the wall, and then two hands appear tht begin 'wrestling' with the creature, and then it slips back underneath the wall. The monster is created with a bunch of abstract, colorful, biomorphic shapes, and there is lot of movement to this piece. I would somehow like to represent the past and the present, which in turn would be showing split personalities. I just recently went through some tough times in the past, and I would like to represent coming out of darkness and going into light; going through a bad time, and coming into the light/future. One side of the portrait will represent darkness, and I will do this by showing darker, colder images. The other side will represent happiness, lightness, and hopefullness, which is a portrayal of a hopeful future. I will incorporate personal images that give me hope, and make me feel better in hard times.

Analyizing an Abstract Painting

This abstract painting is by Kandinsky, and it is called Fugue, and was painted in 1914. I was drawn to this painting, first of all, because of its vivid colors. I generally love rich blues, and this painting has a lot of that rich blue color in it, therefore my eye was drawn to it. He uses a lot of various lines and shapes, and I greatly appreciate the richness of the textures. The organic lines and bright colors, I think, gives this painting a happy and exciting tone. This painting reminds me of a fantasy landscape. The combination of dark and light colors gives it a sort of whimsical feel. What also caught my eye was the object in the middle with the white slashes. Although this painting is abstract, that object to me looks like a ship, and it is sailing in a colorful sea. I also consider the title of the painting, which is Fugue. A fugue is a type of song that is sung in a round, and it gradually builds upon itself. For example, the song 'Row Row Your Boat' is a fugue. So therefore, considering that I see a ship or a boat in the middle of this painting, I immediately thought of that song, and also related it to the title of the painting.

Inspiration for Project 1

I have always been interested in and intrigued by the idea of dreams. Always having very vivid dreams myself, I have always wanted to try to re-create my dreams through art. Therefore, I greatly admire those artists who are able to accomplish this task by creating dream-like paintings, drawings, or other forms of art. Surrealists, for example, studied the Freudian Psychology and theories of dreams, and attempted to create "hand-painted" dreams. Salvador Dali and Rene Magritte both attempted to create 'magic realism', in which they incorporated realistic images into a dream-like setting. They also juxtaposed two or more completely random images that had nothing to do with one another by putting them in a composition together, thus creating a relationship between the images. For this project, I would like to play off of this idea; juxtapose random images to create a dream-like composition, the goal being to re-create a dream that I may have had in the past.

The image above and the image below are by Magritte:

The images below are both by Salvador Dali:

The last couple of images are two dream photomontages that I randomly came across.
